From the inside out: ten boundary-blurring spaces
From workplaces inspired by local architecture to the welcoming shade of a hotel patio, we handpick a selection of projects softening the lines between inside and out.
Mix 229 has landed – exploring key themes and insights from the year behind and the one ahead.

Dear readers,
It’s both the last issue of this year and the first of next. Fitting then, that so much of the delicious content within deals either with looking back and lessons learnt or ahead, considering radical innovation and what it means to shatter convention. We explore, also, the biggest themes and concerns of our times: sustainability in projects including room2 Belfast, the city’s first bona fide ecohotel; inclusivity in our Mix Roundtable with Tarkett; and equality, provocatively asking if our spaces are mostly designed for men. Elsewhere, we visit the Trifle*-designed headquarters of MOO, discover the TODD Architects-helmed new Queen’s Business School Student Hub and question if concrete is really the villain of design and development.
Enjoy,
Harry McKinley

Influenced by the flexible qualities of Tarkett’s material catalogue, the vinyl and textile products envelop curved walls and individual elements throughout the Tarkett Atelier London gallery space. Asan extension to this visual language, Note (design studio) sculpted a fluid form spelling out ‘MIX’ in a palette of strong brick red and calm beige.
