The latest offering from the lifestyle aparthotel brand, Locke at East Side Gallery is situated amongst Berlin’s trendiest inner-city districts Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Mitte, and will feature a coworking and events space, coffee shop and concept bar-restaurant.
Designed by Matthew Grzywinski of Grzywinski+Pons, Locke’s third German property takes its design cues from its surroundings – most notably the former Berlin Wall and neighbouring parks. The hotel’s 176 studio apartments come complete with kitchenettes and living areas, offering impressive river or skyline views. Neutral tones and natural textures are punctuated by pops of playful colours, with walls of timber panelling and kiln-formed glass partitions inspired by the neighbouring River Spree.
On the ground floor, social spaces comprising a third-wave coffee shop, a bar and restaurant, reception lounge and coworking spaces are connected by non-continuous walls, creating ‘neighbourhoods’ in the space. Built-in seating and planters are fabricated from locally-sourced bricks, and furnishings reflect the timber used throughout the building – tied together by verdant greenery covering the ceiling.
An ‘audiophile’ bar and restaurant, ANIMA, is inspired by Japan’s ‘Kissaten’ cafés that developed in the 20th century, serving a local and seasonal menu, cocktails, craft beer and natural wine.
“Locke at East Side Gallery is a very special project for us,” comments Eric Jafari, Chief Development Officer and Creative Director at edyn, Locke’s parent brand. “Berlin is a city filled with history, creativity and innovation and we are excited to be bringing Locke to this incredible location. With a partnership already established with concept bar and restaurant ANIMA, we look forward to partnering with more local businesses and creating a space in which guests can fully immerse themselves in the culture of the city.”
